We're so excited to have you all here for our wedding! We know some of you will be traveling from afar, and for some of you, this may be your first time in Hong Kong. We will compile a list of our favorite things to do/eat/try to make the most of your time here!
Star Ferry: Trip across Victoria Harbor
Take a ride on the star ferry to go across Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. This journey offers the enjoyment of the Hong Kong Skyline and Victoria Harbour view to the fullest, particularly stunning at night.
The Peak
The highest point of Hong Kong Island that overlooks the charming city. Night views are even more mesmerising! You can take the Peak Tram up/down the steep slope as a part of the experience! There is also a lovely 1-hour trail to take in the view and get some gentle exercise in!
Mong Kok
Major flavourful local areas in Kowloon, with old multi-story buildings. A Lot of points of attractions here:
Ladies market: Area for souvenirs shopping or just to experience the vibe! Be sure to negotiate for better prices - try cutting it to at least half!
Temple Street: Known for palm readers and Clay Pot Rice which is a perfect dish for a winter night! (You can also try the frog leg in Clay Pot Rice for a unique twist!)
Goldfish market: Although we can’t say that it is the place with the best animal welfare, it is interesting to see the traditional pet shops. There are quite a few famous food stores such as Kam Wah Cafe. They serve amazing pineapple bun (best with the slab of butter!) and local egg tart.
Lan Kwai Fong & Soho area
LKF & Soho are where the nightlife is in Hong Kong. You can just walk through these streets to experience the vibe!
Pottinger street is quite a picturesque spot! Also brings you up to the Soho area, although you can of course, take the escalator as the slopes in Central is quite steep!
La Cabane (wine bar), Fineprint (coffee shop), Cheung Hing Kee (our favourite buns) are just up there! Details at the food section!
West Kowloon Cultural District
Large harborfront space with a couple of museums and arts and culture
Tai O Fishing Village
If you have a full day to spend, consider going to the fishing village in Tai O. Many shops would sell locally made various salty fish, dried seafood and shrimp paste. In the photos you can see the fisher folks have lived and built their houses on stilts.
Outlying islands: they are flavourful of the village life in Hong Kong. There are some western cafes infused amongst some local seafood restaurants.
Lamma Island
Cheung Chau - A lot of people would rent a bike to ride around the island for a relaxing day.
Trams in the Hong Kong Island
If you have some time at night and would like to quietly enjoy Hong Kong, For $3 HKD you can take a long ride on trams which is quite romantic and often filmed. You can get on wherever you see the tram stations, but make sure youre going to the right direction if you are using it to go somewhere!
Horse Racing
The happy valley racecourse is a vibrant place with a unique atmosphere. Having a beer or two with live performances to just absorb the atmosphere can be a fantastic experience with or without gambling. Their racing days are 26 Dec, 1 Jan, 8 Jan. Go to Pang’s Kitchen that is not far from the racecourse for a lovely dinner!
Local / Hong Kong Food
Tung Po
Lively “dai pai dong”, cafeteria-style venue offering a seafood-centric menu of classic Hong Kong grub & beer. Good place to learn how to open a bottle of beer with one single chopstick!
Pang’s Kitchen
Located near Happy Valley which makes it perfect to go to before/after seeing the horserace. Warmly family-run, all of their dishes are great!
Cha Chan Teng (HK Style Café)
Cha Chan Teng - being the local Hong Kong cafes, be mindful the auntie & uncle waiters can be louder, blunter but very sweet at times. I would say ready in your mind what you are going to order before sitting would be better. I would say it is worth it!
If you do stop by, try their pineapple buns or even better, with the cold thick slice of butter inside that we called Bor Lor Yau (Bor Lor = Pineapple; Yau = oil)
You should not miss Hong Kong style milk tea - but be careful - they are quite high in caffeine if you are sensitive!
Cheung Hing (Happy Valley) - Very local historic cafe of Hong Kong where many celebrities have been. They are famous for pineapple bun sandwich (Yes, pineapple buns with luncheon meat and fried inside), and their egg tarts are very famous too!
Kam Wah Cafe (Mong Kok) - near Goldfish Market
Kwan Kee Claypot Rice (Michelin Guide) - is one of the most famous shops in Hong Kong! But do not go when you are starving as there is often a long wait! Try earlier or later at night!
Street food:
Egg Waffle as a light street snack
- Mammy’s pancake
- North point pancake
Fei Jie in Mong Kok. If you are into trying to eat flavourful snacks, this is for you! From cuttlefish balls to turkey kidneys - depending on how adventurous you are! You would see it from afar with the long queue.
Noodles:
Tam Jai / Tam Jai Sam Gor. Local favourite. Tre are many branches serving different spicy/sour yunnan noodles. Absolutely addicting. If you can only take ShinRamen spiciness level, I recommend ordering ‘10 little spice’ and do not go more than ‘5 little spice’.
Kau Kee Restaurant (Central). Michelin guide - possibly the best beef brisket noodles in Hong Kong, Wesley’s favourite! Angel likes the curry beef brisket noodles with e-fu noodles (pronounced as E Meen)
Dim Sum:
Tim Ho Wan has become the fast-pace dim sum places if you are in for a quick treat!
Food from other Countries
La Vache
Parisian Steakhouse with unlimited fries. Two locations on HK island and one at Tsim Tsa Tsui. The one in Central is the most vibrant one out of all, and when you are waiting - you can grab some wine at Angel’s favourite bar La Vache.
Samsen is a michelin guide Thai food - great vibes and very close to a famous bar called Coa.
Coffee:
Fineprint (Angel’s favourite coffee shop), there are quite a few branches. The one at Soho is around touristy photo spots whereas the one in quarry bay is relaxing! Australian coffee, their Ricotta toast is a nice sweet breakfast!
In terms of Wesley’s favourite coffee spot - it is Starbucks.
Drinks:
Wesley’s go-to Bar
Draftland (draft cocktails) - where they organized the cocktails according to the strength of alcohol. As I(Angel) am typing this.. I don’t know how many do the boys usually drink there…….
Angel’s go-to Bar
La Cabane (wine bar) - cute little bar if you are in the area. They have plenty of bistro food as well - lunch options are good too!
Famous Bars:
Coa is a #1 Asian Best bars for a few years! Angel doesn’t like cocktails usually but Coa has never disappointed!
Ozone is the highest rooftop bar in the world, located at the top floor of Ritz-Carlton where our Banquet would be! Not only the scenary, their cocktails do not disappoint either! Do pick a night with clear sky to enjoy the view to the fullest!
